11-12 June: Excellence in Teacher Training Workshop, School of Chemistry
On 11 and 12 June the School of Chemistry played host to an evening and a day of talks and exhibitions for the PGCE students who took part in the first cycle and feedback for the Discover LabSkills project.
On Thursday they were treated to a talk by scientist, author, photographer, historian and broadcaster Adam Hart-Davis on 'What has Chemistry Done for Us?'. This was followed by a drinks reception.
Friday began with a poster session and LabSkills Evaluation. Each of the attendees had prepared a poster about their experience using the software as part of their training and teaching.
The first lecture of the day was given by Bob Worley, Lead Chemistry Advisor at CLEAPSS (Consortium of Local Education Authorities for the Provision of Science Services), who showed the students a few dos and don'ts of practical chemistry in the classroom.

Over lunch the students got a chance to look around an exhibition by relevant bodies such as Science Learning Centres, the TDA (Training and Development Agency for Schools), STEMpoint and Teachable. Caroline Tolond from the RSC gave a talk entitled 'Careers Advice for Students Choosing Chemistry' and several future, present and former RSC School Teachers Fellows demonstrated some fun practicals that can be used to augment lessons aided by the Bristol ChemLabS School Teacher Fellow Tim Harrison.
Eleven of the attendees won the networkable version of the Chemistry LabSkills software for their new schools as prizes for the standards of their presentations.
This event was organised by the RSC and sponsored by Pfizer.
02 April: Dissemination Conference

Bristol ChemLabS held a one-day Dissemination Conference in the School of Chemistry for delegates from chemistry and other academic disciplines attending from other UK HEIs as well as from within the University of Bristol. The conference showcased the CETL's developments of the last four years, notably the Teaching Labs, the Dynamic Laboratory Manual and Outreach.
There was a great deal of enthusiasm from delegates about what had been achieved. The level of interest and engagement could be judged by the high volume of questions. Many of the 42 delegates had heard something about ChemLabS from colleagues and had attended to find out more. Asked if he had got what he had expected or hoped for from the day, one delegate said “Oh yes, and much more!"
01 April: Bristol ChemLabS Advisory Board Meeting
08 January: Education Support Unit's Learning and Teaching Exhibition 2008/09
Linda Sellou hosted a stand on ' Labskills – A Dynamic Lab Manual for Schools' and was also presented with the University's Engagement Award at the afternoon ceremony. Tom Podesta and Tim Obey were jointly presented with the Faculty of Science Award Recognising Support for Teaching and Learning.
