A Chemical Delight – A Lecture Demonstration
'A Chemical Delight' is a demonstration lecture to be given by Tim Harrison from the School of Chemistry, University of Bristol.
The lecture covers
- What is and is not a chemical reaction?
- The effect of change of factors on rates of reaction
- Activation energy, enzymes and catalysts
- a car space close to the lecture hall/room from which to offload equipment
- a data projector and screen
- about 10 ft of table-top space
- parking close to the venue
- access to a sink (for clearing up and as a source of water - does not need to be in the same room)
- waste bins, broom, dustpan and brush
- any flash detectors or smoke alarms to be disabled or switched to manual.
Tim Harrison is the first School Teacher Fellow, Science Communicator in Residence and Director of Outreach at Bristol ChemLabS. Prior to this he has been a Head of Chemistry and Science College Director. Tim has taught chemistry for 30 years and his work is mainly in the promotion of chemistry. Tim won the Secondary Education Teaching Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2005, the 2007 University of Bristol's Engagement Award for the Faculty of Science and the Royal Society’s inaugural Hawksbee Award in 2010.
The lecture is punctuated throughout with demonstrations and there are versions for KS4 and Post 16 students.
The lecture demonstration is 60 to 75 minutes long depending on the age of the audience. For senior students some aspects of kinetics are examined in greater detail. The general version of the lecture will be presented to members of the wider community, for example parents, visually impaired people, the scouts and church groups.
This lecture has been available to schools and colleges from the Autumn Term 2008.

There is a charge made for this lecture to cover the cost of transport, disposables, technician time and subsistence.

Notes on the Speaker
Bristol ChemLabS Outreach was awarded a Big Tick in the Business in the Community’s Awards for Excellence 2009. An independent panel judged the project's outreach and engagement activities with schools, teachers and students of all ages to be making a strikingly positive and sustained impact on the community. It has also has been ‘Highly Commended’ in the national Business in the Community's Bank of America Merrill Lynch Education Award. This honour was reaccredited 2010 and 2011
