Sadly Steve passed away shortly after his retirement. Obituary

FameLab UK Bristol Heat - 11 December 2014:

Tim Harrison was invited to be a judge in the regional Bristol heat of the FameLabUK Competition (www.famelab.org) to find and support the UK's most talented new science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) communicators. With 14 talented young scientists on stage, including a number of PhD students from Bristol University, and a wonderful and supportive audience, the heat in Bristol was a great success.


Retirement of a long-standing member of the ChemLabS Outreach Team

Bristol ChemLabS senior technical manager Steve Croker, known to a great many CHeMneT members who have visited the undergraduate teaching laboratories over the last 10 years or longer, has taken early retirement on ill health.

ECU Visiting Fellow status

Following on from his very successful return visit to Edith Cowan University (ECU), Perth, Australia, Tim Harrison has been awarded Visiting Fellow status.


ChemLabS in the Caribbean

In a continuing project with the British Council (France) an outreach team from Bristol spent a week in the French Departement of Guadeloupe working with local schools while based at the University of the Antilles.


Bristol ChemLabS Contributes to RSC’s Aspirin Synthesis Pre-lab Resource - 22/09/14

A new RSC resource for Post 16 Chemistry has just been released on the RSC’s Learn Chemistry website. Based on the Bristol ChemLabS pre-lab methodology students can work through the lab techniques and theory behind this common synthesis. Each of the four levels of the ‘Aspirin screen experiment’ take approximately 30 minutes to complete and are designed to be used as pre-lab activities in class or as homework. ChemLabS to return to Malta - 03/09/14

Bristol ChemLabS has once more been invited to give lecture demonstrations at the NSTSF sponsored National Science Week in Malta.

ChemLabS Receives Outreach Grants - 02/09/14

ChemLabS Receives 3 RSC Outreach Small Grants Primary and secondary students in the south of England will benefit form 3 Royal Society of Chemistry grants. These targeted monies will support Demonstration Chemistry Training for Postgraduate Chemistry, some primary science assemblies for in South West England and several Chemistry demonstration Lectures for geographically remote schools in Devon.


Primary outreach carries on apace last year - 27/08/14

In the academic year 2013/14 there were 76 primary school visits. 13063 primary pupils from the 176 schools taking part experienced some form of direct Bristol ChemLabS outreach. 2039 teachers and teaching assistants in the 18 counties (plus Malta) visited saw the assemblies and benefited from ‘CPD by diffusion’ during these events

Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) Project Expansion - 01/08/14

The Royal Society of Chemistry has now announced that both Bristol and Bath Universities will have their own SIAS kits as the sharing arrangement is no longer tenable due to the increase in demand from schools all over the South West of England.


Outreach FRSC - 25/07/14

Tim Harrison, the Bristol ChemLabS Director of Outreach, has been made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

ChemLabS International activities - 21/07/14

The international nature of ChemLabS Outreach was evident his month with visits from Irish, Maltese and German school students and visits from American undergraduates hot on the tail of a visit by undergraduates from Strasbourg. Additionally a teacher training session took place in Malta.

Chemistry Images part of RSC exhibition - 14/07/14

Images from researchers working at the School of Chemistry department and creative writing by primary school students inspired by the pictures are being shown in London as part of a Royal Society of Chemistry exhibition at Burlington House, Piccadilly. The exhibition is part of the RSC's Chemistry and Art project and aims to display different people interpretations of chemistry and art. The exhibition is a free event open to the public and will run from 14th to 25th July (10.00am - 4.00pm). Find out more here and see the exhibition going up here . The popularity of the Open Laboratories Programme has been evident this month. Several requests for lab space have, sadly, not been possible due to high occupancy: some days have seen multiple programmes running morning and afternoon. Some colleagues continue to book a year ahead to ensure availability.


Local Schools Take the Honours in Chemistry Competitions - 28/05/14

At the annual Salters’ Chemistry Festival for Year 7 and 8 students the two practical competitions were won by Clifton College Preparatory School and Fairfield School. Sixteen teams were in competition. Congratulations to all who took part.

Once again Bristol ChemLabS Outreach returns to Malta - 14/04/14

Preeti Kaur and Sarah Glover presented at the 2014 National Student Travel Foundation (NSTF) Science Expo Week in Malta last week. They performed the lecture demonstration ‘A Pollutant’s Tale’ 15 times; 11 performances saw 287 secondary students enthused and a further 4 saw 95 primary pupils excited. In all youngsters and their teachers from 12 schools were involved.


Busy month for outreach -31/03/14

Another busy outreach month with 29 events carried out.  Events were held for students from Bristol, Somerset, Wiltshire, Dorset, Manchester, Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire, BANES, Gwent, London and Oxfordshire. 2930 primary pupils, 1720 secondary school students and numerous teachers were also engaged.


Outreach in the Outback - 13/02/14

Bristol ChemLabS has been asked by Edith Cowan University in Western Australia to take the lecture demonstration ‘A Pollutant’s Tale’ to the Outback in a project aimed at promoting the Sciences and university entrance with Indigenous students.


Demand Exceeds Outreach Provision - 30/06/14

Bristol ChemLabS targets schools - 30/01/14

Events on a project where Bristol ChemLabS engages with targeted schools has begun thanks to a £5k grant from a widening participation portfolio held by the Science Faculty of the University of Bristol.

New Year’s INSET for CHeMneT members - 20/1/14

The individual seasons of the Science Updates course for teachers on the Masters of Science and Education Programme has been opened up to CHeMneT members free of charge. The sessions on a variety of aspects of contemporary science continue into March. See Wider Community Upcoming for details.
