09 November: Doctoral Training Centre Anaesthetic Synthesis Day

66 post 16 students from 5 schools spent the day at the School of Chemistry engaged in a full day of activity. In the morning the students synthesised and analysed the solid anaesthetic benzocaine. Jonathan Matlock accompanied visiting teachers on a tour of the School of Chemistry.

Postgraduate chemist Steve Cooper started the afternoon of talks and demonstrations with a presentation entitled 'What it is like being a student at Bristol?'. This was followed by the talk 'The Synthesis and Development of Drugs: The story of Ibuprofen' delivered by Phillip Unsworth and Mark Greenhalgh. Tim Harrison completed the day with the lecture demonstration 'A Chemical Delight'.

'Just wanted to say thanks for an excellent day yesterday. Our students really enjoyed it and found it incredibly informative as well!!' Sorcha McCloskey Fitzharrys School.

'We had a fantastic time on Wednesday. All of the students have come back into school describing what they did to other students in their Chemistry lessons. There is definitely some renewed enthusiasm for Chemistry which has come back with them. Thank you very much.'
Sarah Barker (St Mary Redcliffe and Temple School).

'I would like to thank you for an excellent day which was well organised, and very well conveyed. Your facility is a wonder to behold as a chemist and your PhD students excellent hosts and tutees to the students. Sophie Edwards our former pupil did an excellent job along with her 'colleague' in looking after my group. The group themselves came away feeling very positive about the day (ie having understood what was happening!) and having enjoyed the day. I would be very keen to return in the future or possibly send some of my department up with pupils it will be of a benefit to them all.'
Eurig Thomas (Head of Chemistry, Ysgol Gyfun Garth Olwg).

Postgraduate chemists from the Chemical Synthesis Doctoral Training Centre (DTC) were: Katie Maskill, Megan Shaw, Nicholas Race, Paul Cogswell, Dominic Pye, Ruth Dooley, Charles Renney, Sophie Edwards, Nina Ursinyova, Ryan Beattie and Iain Thistlethwaite who were joined by Elle Wadsworth.

The schools attending were: Tewkesbury School (Gloucs), St Mary Redcliffe and Temple School (Bristol), Fitzharrys School (Oxon), Ysgol Gyfun Garth Olwg (Rhondda Cynon Taf) and Holyrood Academy (Chard).

The event was sponsored by Bristol Chemical Synthesis Doctoral Training Centre.
