December

12 December: Dulverton Middle School, Somerset

Thanks to funding from the EDF 'Inspire STEM' programme, a team from Bristol ChemLabS delivered a Science Day for the pupils at this West Somerset middle school. The 120 Year 5-8 pupils all enjoyed the Assembly on the theme of chemical reactions, 'A Chemical Delight' given by Alison Rivett. The 60 Year 5 & 6 pupils spent the rest of the day taking part in practical workshops with post-graduate chemistry students Beatrice Cattoz, Monika Zeleznik & Benoit Quignon.

05 December: Filton Avenue Junior School, Bristol

As part of their Science Week Alison Rivett visited this Bristol school to deliver a demonstration assembly on the topic of 'Gases In The Air' to the 300 Key Stage 2 pupils. Alison stayed for the rest of the morning and took part in 'Ask A Scientist' sessions with the Year 3 & 4 pupils, who all had lots of questions about the experiments they had just seen and what it is like being a scientist. This event was funded by an International Year of Chemistry Challenge Grant from the Bristol & District section of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

29 November: Brentry Primary School, Bristol

Thanks to funding from an International Year of Chemistry Challenge Grant from the Bristol & District section of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Alison Rivett & Sarah Glover visited this north Bristol school to deliver a demonstration assembly on the topic of 'Gases In The Air' to the 210 Reception, Key Stage 1 & 2 pupils.

23 November: A Pollutant's Tale: 1000th Performance, The Great Hall, University of Bristol

Tim Harrison and Dudley Shallcross entertained around 650 Bristol primary pupils from Years 5 and 6, and those who are home tutored, in the University's Great Hall during the morning in celebration of the 1000th performance of the suite of lecture demonstrations given over the last 6 years. The chemistry 'show' has been given on 5 continents and in over a dozen countries.

The performance was sponsored by the Public Engagement Office. The schools involved were: Ashton Gate Primary, Sefton Park Primary, Henbury Court Primary, Hillcrest Primary, St Matthias, Dr Bell C of E Primary and Christchurch Primary.

20 November: Air Balloon Hill Primary School, Bristol

Thanks to funding from an International Year of Chemistry Challenge Grant from the Bristol & District section of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Alison Rivett spent the morning at this Bristol school delivering 2 demonstration assemblies all about the 'Gases In The Air' to the 600 Key Stage 1 & 2 pupils.

Afterwards the Headteacher said "The staff and children were enthused by the assembly, so thank you very much for proving that science is fun!"

13 November: Bradshaw Hall Primary School, Cheadle, Stockport,Cheshire

Tim Harrison presented an afternoon demonstration assembly 'Gases in the Air' to all 340 pupils in Years 1-6 and representatives from the local secondary school as well as staff from Atmospheric Physics at the University of Manchester and the Education Department at Sheffield Hallam University. The event was sponsored by the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust and coordinated by the AZSTT Primary College member Gareth Metcalfe.

06 November: RSC Assembly, Victoria Park Primary School, Bristol

Thanks to funding from an International Year of Chemistry Challenge Grant from the Bristol & District section of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Alison Rivett spent the morning at this Bristol school delivering 2 demonstration assemblies all about the 'Gases In The Air' to the 400 Key Stage 1 & 2 pupils.

Afterwards the teacher said "Thank you so much for yesterday it was awesome! The staff and children were blown away by the experience (almost literally!)."

06 November: RSC Assembly,St Anne's Park Primary School, Bristol

Thanks to funding from an International Year of Chemistry Challenge Grant from the Bristol & District section of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Alison Rivett spent the afternoon at this Bristol school, where the 160 Key Stage 1, 2 & Reception pupils enjoyed an exciting demonstration assembly on the topic of 'Gases In The Air'.

01 November: RSC Assembly, Hillesley Primary School, Gloucestershire

Thanks to funding from an International Year of Chemistry Challenge Grant from the Bristol & District section of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Alison Rivett & Sarah Glover visited this small village school where the 37 pupils enjoyed a lively assembly on the theme of 'Solids, Liquids & Gases' in the beautiful surroundings of their Chapel Hall.

26 October: Dacre Braithwaite CE Primary School, Summerbridge, Harrogate, N Yorks

Tim Harrison presented the demonstration assembly 'Gases in the Air' to all 74 pupils from pre-school to Year 6 at this Yorkshire school. The visit was sponsored by AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust (AZSTT) and was coordinated by AZSTT Primary College member Katja Rudden.

25 October: AZSTT Science Assembly, Castleside Primary School, Consett, County Durham

Sophie Franklin presented the assembly demonstration 'Gases in the Air' for 90 pupils in Years 1-6 as part of the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust sponsored visits.

"The afternoon was fantastic! and the enthusiasm generated was amazing. I'm sure we will have some children inspired to become scientists of the future. Thanks again, we would love to be involved in the future." Liz Charlton, Headteacher

25 October: AZSTT Science Assembly, Kells Lane Primary School, Gateshead, Tyne and Wear

Tim Harrison presented the assembly demonstration 'Gases in the Air' for 230 pupils in Years 3-6 and a second talk for 40 Year 2 pupils as part of the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust sponsored visits. AZSTT Primary College member Simon Smith is assisting in the organisation of the visit.

25 October: AZSTT Science Assembly, Priory Primary School, Tynemouth, Tyne and Wear

Tim Harrison presented the assembly demonstration 'Gases in the Air' for 360 pupils in Years 1-6 as part of the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust sponsored visits. AZSTT Primary College member Eva Hodgson is assisting in the organisation of the visit.

24 October: Science Assembly, Wheatlands School, Redcar, Cleveland

Tim Harrison gave a performance of the demonstration assembly 'Gases in the Air', to all 330 pupils at the school. The visit was part of an AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust (AZSTT) sponsored event. Bristol ChemLabS worked with AZSTT Primary College member, Kay Coverdale, to deliver this event. The event was part of the school's celebration of a Gold Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM).

24 October: Science Assembly, Ingleby Mill Primary School, Stockton-on-Tees

Tim Harrison gave a performance of the demonstration assembly 'Gases in the Air', to all 270 pupils in Years 2-4 at the school. Tim then went on to spend an hour working with one class of Year 4 pupils. The visit was part of an AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust (AZSTT) sponsored event. Bristol ChemLabS worked with AZSTT Primary College member, Kay Coverdale, to deliver this event.

23 October: AZSTT Assembly Spring Gardens Primary School, North Shields, Tyneside

Tim Harrison delivered a performance of the demonstration assembly 'Gases in the Air' to 390 KS2 pupils from the host school and King Edward Primary School.
AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust (AZSTT) sponsored the event. Bristol ChemLabS worked with AZSTT Primary College member Kate Ardron, to deliver this assembly.

23 October: AZSTT Assembly, Preston Grange Primary School, North Shields, Tyneside

Tim Harrison presented an afternoon performance of 'Gases in the Air' to 230 Key Stage 2 pupils from the host school and Whitehouse Primary, a local school.
The visit was sponsored by the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust and organised by AZSTT Primary College member Kate Ardron.

22 October: Scawthorpe Sunnyfields Primary School, Doncaster, S. Yorks

Tim Harrison presented the demonstration assembly 'Gases in the Air' to a total of 190 Key Stage 2 pupils from the host school and the neighbouring Castle Hill Primary School. This is the second time in 2012 that this area of South Yorkshire has been visited.

17 October: PSQM Awards Ceremony, Old Priory Junior School, Plymouth

Dudley Shallcross gave a demonstration of practical chemistry (a 'science extravaganza') to an audience of 300 pupils, teachers, governors and parents at an award ceremony in Plymouth. The event celebrated the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) awards at local schools. Dudley Shallcross is the Director of the AstaZeneca Science Teaching Trust (AZSTT).

The Devon schools attending were: Great Torrington Bluecoat CE Infant & Nursery School, Victoria Road Primary School Old Priory Junior School and The Ridgeway Plympton.

12 October: Bishop Bronescombe Primary School, Boscoppa, St Austell, Cornwall

Sarah Glover gave a performance of ‘Gases in the Air' to 250 excited pupils from reception to Year 6 at the mid Cornwall primary school. Ten teachers also saw the presentation.

The assembly was sponsored by the RSC Western Region Analytical International Year of Chemistry Challenge project and was organised with the help of Ed Walsh, Lead Consultant for Science, Cornwall Learning.

12 October: Devoran Primary School, Devoran, Truro, Cornwall

Tim Harrison gave a performance of 'Gases In the Air' to all 150 Year 1-7 pupils and their teachers at this Cornish school.

The visit was sponsored by sponsored by the RSC Western Region Analytical International Year of Chemistry Challenge project and was organised with the help of Ed Walsh, Lead Consultant for Science, Cornwall Learning.

11 October: Tregolls School, Truro, Cornwall

About 120 primary school children from years 1-6, and their teachers, enjoyed a 45 minute lecture demonstration on the 'Gases in the Air' at this Cornwall Academy. The children were engaged and amazed and asked Sarah Glover, who gave the demo, to come back again the next day!

The visit was sponsored by sponsored by the RSC Western Region Analytical International Year of Chemistry Challenge project and was organised with the help of Ed Walsh, Lead Consultant for Science, Cornwall Learning.

11 October Tregony School, Cornwall

Sarah Glover gave an audience of about 150 primary school children from Reception to year 6 an hour long demonstration on the 'Gases in the Air' at this community primary school. The pupils, particularly the boys, were riveted and the year six who were particularly interested had the chance to ask questions and do a bit of impromptu hands-on work at the end of the lecture.

The head teacher said "it was a historic day, as it was the first time a female scientist had visited the school and given the children such an experience".

"Our school thoroughly enjoyed the science assembly delivered by Sarah last month. The children were absolutely captivated by it and it was a great way to bring science to life - both for the children and the staff! I was also struck by the way the children were so gripped and enthralled. Thank you!"

05 October: Chemistry Conference, Leweston School, Dorset

Tim Harrison and John Kilcoyne presented at a chemistry conference for 150 Year 5 and 6 pupils from 5 local primary and preparatory schools. The lecture demonstrations were 'Gases in the Air' (Harrison) and 'Fuelling the Future: Fuelling the Fun' (Kilcoyne).

Schools attending were: Kinghton House, Trent Young, Hazelbury Bryan, St Mary at Bradford Abbas, Durweston, and a second St Mary's schools all from the local area.

02 October: Science Lecture, Cheltenham Ladies College, Gloucs

A total of 28 KS2 pupils and their teachers from The Elms School and St Hughes enjoyed a lecture demonstration given by Tim Harrison and assisted by John Kilcoyne (Sunderland).

The lecture was part of a full day of activities sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry and Cheltenham Ladies College.

01 October: Science Conference Day, Wycliffe, Stonehouse, Gloucs

Tim Harrison performed the demonstration lecture 'Gases in the Air' to 180 pupils in Years 5-7 to an invited group of schools.

Schools attending were: The British School (Wotton-Under-Edge), Wycliffe School, Bluecoat (Wotton-Under-Edge), Horsley Primary, Hopelands and Wycliffe Preparatory school.

13 September: AZSTT 'Gases in the Air' Assemblies,New Inn Primary School, Pontypool, Gwent

Tim Harrison presented two 'Gases in the Air' assemblies for a total of 550 KS1 and KS2 pupils and 50 teachers at New Inn Primary School. This event was sponsored by the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust (AZSTT).

Tim Worked with Philippa Minto, AZSTT Primary College member to organise this event.

"Tim came to our school yesterday to do two demonstration lectures for our KS2 and FP pupils. We have had many theatre groups and entertainers here in the past but I have never seen the pupils SO engaged and excited. The hall was absolutely buzzing during the lecture and the pupils were discussing what they had witnessed during break time and still at lunch."

13 September: AZSTT 'Gases in the Air', Pontnewydd Primary School, Cwmbran, Gwent

Tim Harrison revisited this Welsh primary school after a break of 5 years to deliver the demonstration assembly 'Gases in the Air' to 250 KS2 pupils and 15 teachers.
This event was also organised by Philippa Minto, a member of the AZSTT Primary College, and was sponsored by the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust.
