March

26 March: Primary Presentations of 'Gases in the Air', Falmouth School, Cornwall

Falmouth School played host to a total of 60 Year 6 primary pupils from Marlborough and Falmouth Primary schools when Tim Harrison presented the demonstration talk 'Gases in the Air'.

The event was subsidised by the Analytical Division of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

23 March: 'Gases in the Air', Penryn Junior School, Cornwall

Tim Harrison performed the lecture demonstration 'Gases in the Air' for 60 Year 6 pupils at Penryn College as part of an RSC Analytical Division sponsored visit to the Cornish school.

22 March: St Joseph's School, Launceston, Cornwall

Tim Harrison performed the demonstration assemby 'Gases in the Air' to all 100 primary aged pupils, and some parents, at this Cornish school before going on to work with 34 KS2 pupils in practical workshops. The children were aided in their hands-on activities by Elle Wadsworth and Sarah Glover in their.

19 March: East Salisbury Primary Schools Cluster - Science Festival, Salisbury

A Bristol ChemLabS team of Elle Wadsworth and Sarah Glover provided a series of practical chemistry workshops for 54 pupils from two schools as part 2 of the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust (AZSTT) sponsored event. The event was hosted by Winterbourne Earls Church of England Primary School in a local church.
150 pupils attended the two days of events. The schools participating were: Pitton Primary, Gomeldon Primary, St Andrew's Primary, St Nicholas' Primary, Winterbourne Earls Primary and Winterslow Primary.

"The level of science was accessible to the children yet stretched them and showed them so much more than they knew. The visits have inspired many children into being really enthused by Science. There is a real BUZZ in the whole school. You communicated with the children very well - the approach and manner was spot on." Peter Sainsbury, Event Organiser

16 March: St Andrew's C. of E. (V.C.) Primary School, Stanstead Abbots,Herts

Tim Harrison and postgraduate chemists Shirin Alexander and Beatrice Cattoz spent the morning at the Hertfordshire primary developing science practical skills with 55 pupils in Year 5 and 6. The pupils each enjoyed a 90 minute practical circus. In the afternoon Tim Harrison gave a lecture demonstration to the whole school population of 201 pupils.

"Thank you Tim, to you and your team for a truly inspiring day on Friday. The staff learnt a lot and were captivated by your humour, but - as for the children - they were mesmerised. They left the Hall making comments such as, 'I have never seen anything like that in my life', 'That was amazing', 'I loved it - when can we do it again?' and many other similar and equally ecstatic comments. Thanks you so much - a privilege for us as a school and one that we will not forget in a hurry." Headteacher.

15 March: Enfield Challenge, Winchmore School, Winchmore Hill, London

A Bristol ChemLabS team of Sophie Franklin and Sarah Glover spent the morning at the Enfield school delivering workshops for a group of Year 6 pupils from Highfields Primary School comprising of a demonstration lecture 'Gases in the Air' and a circus of practical work.

Chariklia Ktori, Winchmore School, assisted with the organisation of the event which was part of the Enfield STEM programme for National Science and Engineering Week.

15 March: Primary Science Lecture, Hereford Cathedral School, Herefordshire

Tim Harrison presented the lecture demonstration 'Gases in the Air' to a total of 175 pupils in Years 5 and 6 from several schools in the area.
The schools in attendance were: Ewyas Harold, Leominster, Hereford Academy, March Marcle, Stretton Sugwas and Hereford Cathedral Junior.

13 March: St Andrew's Primary School, Congresbury

Bristol ChemLabS returned to this North Somerset school for the third time to take part in their National Science & Engineering Week celebrations.  Alison Rivett, Elle Wadsworth and Charley Renney spent the morning working with two Year 3/4 classes in some Slime workshops.  The 66 children enjoyed making some sticky goo and discovering the strange properties of polymers.

12 March: Millbrook Primary School, Swindon, Wilts

A Bristol ChemLabS Chemist Elle Wadsworth presented an afternoon demonstration assembly on 'Gases in the Air' to 200 pupils in Years 1-6 to start the school's celebration of National Science and Engineering Week 2012.

07 and 09 March: Science Week Workshops, High Down Junior School, Portishead, Bristol

Dudley Shallcross and an outreach team comprising Karen Shallcross, Sophie Franklin and Rob Richie from Bristol ChemLabS worked with 90 Year 6 pupils at this local school as part of their annual Science Week event. The students enjoyed both a chemistry workshop, where their practical skills were developed, and a workshop on gears.

08 March: Haywards Primary School, Crediton, Devon

Bristol ChemLabS delivered the annual 'Science Day' involving 120 pupils in Years 4-6 and the Reception Class in an assembly on 'Perfume Chemistry' before working with two classes in Years 5 and 6 where the 62 pupils were engaged in circuses of hands-on chemistry investigations.

February

28 February: Primary Science Day and Workshops, Leweston School, Dorset

Tim Harrison presented a performance of 'Gases in the Air' for 70 preparatory school pupils in Years 4-6, from schools in the Sherborne area. Several practical workshops were also be given by a Bristol ChemLabS team of Tim Harrison, Elle Wadsworth and Sarah Abel during the day.

Schools attending were: Sherborne Preparatory, Leweston Preparatory, Knighton House and All Hallows Preparatory Schools.

27 February: East Salisbury Primary School Cluster Science Festival 2012, Salisbury, Wilts

Tim Harrison opened up this workshop day with an assembly demonstration of 'Exciting Science Show - Gases in the Air' to the audience of 180 pupils from Years 3 to 6. Postgraduate Chemists Maddy Strickland, Elle Wadsworth and Sophie Franklin assisted 4 groups of pupils with practical work involving analytical chemistry during the remainder of the day.

The schools in attendance were: Gomeldon Primary Pitton Primary St Andrew's Primary, St Nicholas' Primary, Winterbourne Earls Primary and Winterslow Primary schools.

This event was sponsored by the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust.

27 February: Winterbourne Earls Primary School, Salisbury, Wilts

Tim Harrison gave a performance of 'Gases in the Air' to 160 pupils during an afternoon visit to the school.

This event was sponsored by the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust.

21 February: South Bristol Primaries Gifted & Talented Science Day at The Redmaids' School

For the second year running The Redmaids' School hosted a special Science Day for Gifted & Talented pupils from the South 3 Cluster of Bristol Primary Schools. The 36 Year 5 girls and boys joined 130 Year 5,6 & 7 Redmaids' pupils for an exciting demonstration assembly given by Alison Rivett. The Y5's and 8 Y6's from Redmaids Junior School then spent the rest of the day working in the Senior School laboratories on a variety of practical experiments.

One teacher said afterwards "The children were full of conversation on the coach back and immediately started talking to all their friends about their day when they arrived back at school. I thought it was a superbly constructed day. An excellent assembly, jam-packed with scientific knowledge but delivered in such an entertaining manner that the children hardly knew they were learning! The workshops were brilliant, just pitched at the right level and the children loved using equipment that they would otherwise be unable to use in a primary school environment. So thank you again for a wonderful day which the children will remember for a long time."

The day was partially funded by a grant from the Bristol and District Section of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

The 9 schools attending were: Waycroft Academy, Burnbush Primary, West Town Lane Academy, Holymead Juniors, Broomhill Juniors, St Anne's Juniors, St Anne's Park Primary, St Bernadette's Primary & Hillcrest Primary.

07 February: Winford Primary School

Bristol ChemLabS visited this North Somerset school to take part in their Maths Week. The day began with Elle Wadsworth presenting an assembly for the whole school on the theme of 'Gases In The Air'. In the morning, postgraduate chemists Maddy Strickland, Cathy Cooper and Beatrice Cattoz demonstrated 3 workshops of Slime, Magnesium/Acid and Iodine Clock experiments to 16 Y6 pupils and then to 24 Y4/5s in the afternoon.

07 February:Old Sodbury Primary School

Bristol ChemLabS returned to this South Gloucestershire school to take part in their Science Week.  The day kicked off with a bang with an Assembly for the whole school on the theme of 'Gases In The Air'.  The 74 pupils, including the Reception class were thrilled to see some unstoppable foam, amazing expanding gloves, mysterious bubbling chemicals and to explode some gas-filled balloons!  The 23 Y2 & Y3 pupils then took part in a fun workshop making sticky slime.  The 28 Y4, 5 & 6 pupils spent the afternoon doing more practical science experiments with postgraduate Chemists Monika Zeleznik, James Fothergill & Godiraone Tatolo.

January

31 January: Bishop Road Primary School, Bristol

For the 4th year in a row Bristol ChemLabSwas invited to this Bristol school to provide a day of hands-on science practicals.  The 84 Year 6 pupilstook part in workshops led by Tim Harrison & Alison Rivett and Chemistry postgraduates Charley Renney & James Armstrong.  They explored chemical reactions, colour changes and the composition of soft drinks as well as developing their measuring, observation and predicting skills. 

This event was sponsored by the Bristol and District Branch of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

26 January: Foulds Primary School, High Barnet, London

A Bristol ChemLabS team comprising Elle Wadsworth and Tim Harrison revisited this London school for a morning of activity which involved a school assembly for 180 Year 3-6 pupils on the topic of 'Perfumes and Chemistry' as well as 3 short workshops for 90 Year 4 and 5 pupils.

26 January: Muswell Hill Primary School, Muswell Hill, London

Elle Wadsworth assisted Tim Harrison in presenting the lecture demonstration 'Gases in the Air' to 380 pupils in Years 1 to 6 at this primary school in London.

The visit was sponsored by the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust and was facilitated by AZSTT College member Jeanette Morgan.

25 January: Materials Science Talks, Knowle Park Primary School, Knowle, Bristol

Fred Manby spent the morning working with 200 primary pupils talking and demonstrating the properties of solids, liquid and gases.

This event was sponsored by the Bristol and District Branch of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

24 January: St John's Primary School, Clevedon

For the second year running Bristol ChemLabS visited this North Somerset school to work with their Year 5 & 6 classes'.  The 72 pupils enjoyed an assembly with lots of chemistry demonstrations on their curriculum topic of 'Solids, Liquids & Gases', given by Alison Rivett.  They then took turns to do a fun hands-on Bubbles Workshop with postgraduate Chemistry students  Beatrice Cattoz, James Miles & Elle Wadsworth.

12 January: Christmas Lectures 2012, St Bede’s Catholic College, Bristol.

Tim Harrison gave two lectures to primary pupils from Years 4 to 6 as part of the fourth annual Christmas lectures held by St Bede’s Catholic College. In all 340 pupils and their teachers enjoyed the demonstration talks on ‘Gases in the Air’.

Primary schools attending during the day were: Our Lady of the Rosary (60 pupils), Bank Leaze (50 pupils), St. Bernard’s (60 pupils), St. Joseph’s (60 pupils), Long Cross (64 pupils) and St. Nicholas of Tolentine (46 pupils).

This event was sponsored by the Bristol and District Branch of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

11 January: Christmas Lectures 2012, St Bede’s Catholic College, Bristol.

Tim Harrison gave two lectures to primary pupils from Years 4 to 6 as part of the fourth annual Christmas lectures held by St Bede’s Catholic College. In all 316 pupils and their teachers enjoyed the demonstration talks on ‘Gases in the Air’.

Primary schools attending were: St. Mary’s (60 pupils), St. Teresa’s (60 pupils), Holy Family (47 pupils), SS Peter and Paul (60 Pupils), Corpus Christi (60 pupils) and St. Francis (29 Pupils).

This event was sponsored by the Bristol and District Branch of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

10 January: St Joseph's Primary School, Portishead

Bristol ChemLabS returned to this North Somerset school to spend the morning working with their pupils on their curriculum topic of 'Changing Materials'.  62 Year 5 & 6 pupils enjoyed an Assembly on the theme of 'Solids, Liquids & Gases' given by Alison Rivett.  After that the Y5 class worked with Chemistry postgraduates Maddy Strickland, Charley Renney & Elle Wadsworth on some practical experiments.

This event was sponsored by the Bristol and District Branch of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Afterwards the children all wrote postcards about their experience, one Year 5 pupil said "Thank you so much for coming to our school and transforming it into a science labority [sic].  I learnt so much yesterday that I can't fit it all on this page.  I wish you could come again..."
Their teacher, Mrs Maliphant agreed, saying "It made a huge impact on the children and was one of the most impressive things I have ever witnessed in 20 years of teaching".
