July

17 July: Bubbles Workshop, Hannah More Primary, Bristol

Researcher chemists Sarah Glover and Preeti Kaur spent a morning exploring bubble science with a total of 40 KS2 pupils at this central Bristol primary school.

05 July: AZSTT Science Trails Celebration Day, Haringey, London

Tim Harrison presented the lecture demonstration 'Gases in the Air' to an audience of 100 pupils and their teachers from a consortium of 10 of the borough's primary schools. The event was part of the celebrations of an AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust project involving science trails.

June

29 June: Science and Technology Day, Cotswold School, Bourton on the Water, Gloucs

Preeti Kaur and Benoit Quignon worked with 60 KS2 primary pupils in practical chemistry workshops as part of the secondary schools annual Science and Technology Day for their feeder schools.

26 June: G+T Primary Day for Bridgwater Schools (hosted by Chilton Trinity School)

Chilton Trinity School hosted a Science Day for Year 5-7 Gifted & Talented pupils from local feeder primaries. Sophie Franklin presented 'Gases in The Air' to 170 pupils who were joined by 100 Year 9 and 10 students from the host school.

The primary schools attending were St Joseph's, Sedgmoor Manor, Eastover, Wembdon, Westover Green & Otterhampton.

Postgraduate chemists Maddy Strickland, Adam Nunn and James Fothergill assisted the pupils with their practical work.

21 June: Kingswood Primary School, Wotton under Edge, Gloucs

All 80 pupils in Years 1-6 and their teachers enjoyed a performance of the demonstration assembly on 'Gases in the Air' presented by Tim Harrison. This visit takes place every 3 years.

The assembly was jointly sponsored by the Bristol and District Branch of the RSC and Bristol ChemLabS.

21 June: The British School, Wotton under Edge, Gloucs

Tim Harrison gave a performance of the lecture demonstration assembly on 'Gases in the Air' as part of the school's science week to all 170 pupils at the Gloucestershire primary school before delivering two workshops for all pupils in Year 4-6.

Chemists Sarah Glover, Joshua Howego and Jen Bulpett assisted the pupils with their practical investigations.

19 June : Ashton Vale Primary School

Bristol ChemLabS spent the morning at this south Bristol school as part of their Gifted & Talented (G&T) activity programme. The 24 Year 6 pupils were joined by 12 G&T students from local cluster schools and took part in a practical workshop with postgraduate chemists Sophie Franklin, Sarah Glover & Jen Bulpett. Afterwards the whole school, including reception class (170 children) gave Alison Rivett a great reception for her Assembly on 'Gases In The Air'.

Afterwards the Deputy Head said "Many thanks for Tuesday - it was wonderful. The children and staff are still talking about it now - they thoroughly enjoyed it!"

The local section of Royal Society of Chemistry kindly gave a small grant towards the event

11 June: Science Assembly, Charborough Road Primary, Filton, Bristol

Tim Harrison presented the demonstration assembly 'Gases in the Air' for all 240 pupils and their staff at the local primary school. This event launched the school's science week programme.

This event was co-sponsored by the Bristol and District Branch of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

30 May: Hazelwood Primary School, Belfast, Northern Ireland

Tim Harrison presented the demonstration assembly 'Gases in the Air' to 400 primary pupils and a further 50 parents and other relatives as part of the school's celebration of science. Tim then made presentations of medals to science competitions from each class.

The event was sponsored by the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust and was coordinated by the AZSTT Primary College member Jim McDaid.

29 May: St John's Primary School, Ballymena, Northern Ireland

Tim Harrison visited this coastal primary school and gave a performance of the demonstration assembly 'Gases in the Air' to a total of 140 pupils in Key Stage 2 as part of an AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust (AZSTT) funded project. Four members of the local secondary school and their chemistry teacher also attended.

Bristol ChemLabS worked with AZSTT Primary College members Ciaran Kinney and Mary Haughey to deliver this event.

"Just had our ‘Gases in the Air’ talk with Tim - excellent - had the kids enthralled. Some of them even saying they want to go to Bristol? .... This lecture definitely made the children think about careers in science and how exciting it can be."Ciaran Kinney, Science Coordinator.

29 May: Creavery Primary School, Antrim, Northern Ireland

Tim Harrison visited this very small, rural primary school and gave a performance of the demonstration assembly 'Gases in the Air' to all 46 pupils in Key Stage 2 as part of an AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust (AZSTT) funded project.

Bristol ChemLabS worked with AZSTT Primary College members Lesley Hunter to deliver this event.

28 May: Science Assembly, Castle Hill Primary School, Scawthorpe, Yorks

Tim Harrison gave a presentation of the demonstration assembly ‘Gases in the Air’ to 260 Year 1-6 pupils from Castle Hill and an additional 50 Year 5 and 6 pupils from the neighbouring Sunny Fields Primary School.

This lecture was sponsored by Bristol ChemLabS.

24 May: Science Assembly, Moorpark Junior School, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs

Tim Harrison presented the demonstration assembly 'Gases in the Air' to the whole school of 220 pupils as part of an AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust (AZSTT) sponsored event. Bristol ChemLabS was assisted in the organisation of the visit by Karen Peters of the AZSTT Primary Science College.

24 May: Science Assembly, Alexandra Juniors Junior School, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs

Tim Harrison presented the demonstration assembly 'Gases in the Air' to Year 5 and 6 and a second lecture demonstration to Year 3 and 4. In total 240 pupils as part of an AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust (AZSTT) sponsored event. Bristol ChemLabS was assisted in the organisation of the visit by Karen Peters of the AZSTT Primary Science College.

22 May: Colmore Junior School, Kings Heath, Birmingham, West Midlands

Tim Harrison visited this large Birmingham primary school and gave three performances of the demonstration assembly 'Gases in the Air' to a total of 640 pupils from Years 1-6 as part of an AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust (AZSTT) funded project for all members of the AZSTT College of Primary School Teachers.

Bristol ChemLabS worked with AZSTT Primary College member Sam Harvey, to deliver this event.

04 May: Westgate Primary School, Morecambe, Lancs

Tim Harrison, aided by Shirin Alexander, gave a performance of the demonstration assembly 'Gases in the Air', to 320 pupils in Years 1-5 as part of the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust (AZSTT) sponsored event, during the remainder of the day Bristol ChemLabS worked with AZSTT Primary College member, Lisa Wood, to deliver this event.

'Today we had a fun-packed afternoon of fizz, whizz, bang science. Tim Harrison from Bristol University came to school to impress us all with the wonders of chemistry. From exploding hydrogen balloons to freezing bananas in liquid nitrogen, it was an afternoon filled with lots of 'oooooohs' and 'aaaaaaaaaaahs'. Who knew that science could be so much fun?! A big thank you to the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust for sponsoring the visit. It was definitely an afternoon to remember!!' Lisa Wood.

04 May: Sherwood Primary School, Preston, Lancs

Tim Harrison, aided by Shirin Alexander, gave a performance of the demonstration assembly 'Gases in the Air' to 320 pupils in Years 1-5 as part of the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust (AZSTT) sponsored event. Bristol ChemLabS worked with AZSTT Primary College member Shehnaz Vorajee, to deliver this event.

03 May: St Thomas's CofE Primary School, Kendal Green, Kendal, Lancs

Tim Harrison, aided by Shirin Alexander, visited the school to deliver an afternoon demonstration on 'Gases in the Air' to the 120 KS2 pupils at the Lake District school. This event was sponsored by the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust (AZSTT). Bristol ChemLabS worked with AZSTT Primary College member, Lisa Wood, to deliver this event.

01 May: Primary Science Morning, Appleton Primary School, Wyke, Bradford, Yorks

Tim Harrison, aided by Sarah Glover, delivered a performance of 'Gases in the Air' to 60 pupils in Years 4 and 5 at the school's Appleton Academy site before working with 30 Year 4 pupils in a practical workshop.

The visit was sponsored by the STEM Centre at Bradford University.

April

30 April: Glenaire Primary School, Baildon, Shipley, Yorks

Tim Harrison and Sarah Glover, working with members of the University of Bradford STEM team, delivered a hands-on workshop for all 28 members of Year 5 before Tim Harrison gave a performance of 'Gases in the Air' to all 120 members of Years 3-6.

26 April: Science Day, Buckingham Primary School, Bucks

Tim Harrison gave two performances of the demonstration assembly 'Gases in the Air', to the 550 pupils from Reception to Year 6. A Bristol ChemLabS team of Elle Wadsworth, Shirin Alexander and Beatrice Cattoz also provided a series of 3 practical chemistry workshops for all 80 Year 6 pupils as part of the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust (AZSTT) sponsored event during the day.

"I just wanted to say a huge thank you for today. You are one of the best visitors we have ever had in school and the whole staff and children are buzzing with science!"

Bristol ChemLabS worked with AZSTT Primary College member, Gwen Tong, to deliver this event.

17 April: EDF Primary Science Day, Danesfield School, Williton, Somerset

Bristol ChemLabS, sponsored by EDF Energy, spent the day at the Somerset middle school and specialist science college. Tim Harrison gave two lecture demonstrations of 'Gases in the Air' to all 385 pupils from Years 5 to 8 whilst 56 Year 5 pupils enjoyed two hands-on chemistry workshops. Alison Rivett, Elle Wadsworth and Sarah Glover spent the day with the two classes of Year 5 pupils in, what will become, an annual visit.
