The following six units are a part of the work advised to be covered in Year 4. Under each unit heading there will be a description of that unit and the film which has a clip relevant to it. Each film will have the exact timings for the clip and a description of what it shows. Some topics have more clips than others.
This unit is about how humans move, what skeletons are for and how they work with the muscles. The sections the unit is divided into are; bones and skeletons, comparing skeletons, growing, testing ideas about body size, supporting the body, muscles and bones and muscles and exercise.
The Nightmare Before Christmas All the following clips are short and can be used together to compare and contrast what the human body needs to function and why bones, muscle and skin are important. Time: 00:04:20 - 00:04:41 In this clip we are introduced to Sally, a doll type girl who is the carer of the man who made her. Sally is made of material, wadding and no bones. She unties herself to get away. This can direct the pupil’s thoughts to the topic by asking why we cannot untie ourselves and why she can. Time: 00:13:05 - 00:13:52 Jack Skeleton has just wandered into Christmas land and this clip is to basically look at his physique, or lack of. Why is he so skinny, why does he not have a body shape like you or me? Questions to highlight that muscle and skin make up our body shape and the skeleton is for structure. Time: 00:25:55 - 00:27:20 This clip is of Sally again, she jumps out of her window from a great height to escape her carer and lands on the floor in pieces but doesn’t die. She picks herself up and sews herself back together. Why would we die if we fell that far? What is she missing? Another clip to highlight the importance of a skeleton. |
This unit is about the concepts of a habitat, how an animal belongs to a food chain and what specific conditions are found in a habitat suitable for life. The sections the unit is divided into are; finding different habitats, different animals in different habitats, grouping living things, using keys to identify plants and animals, investigating plants and animals, finding out about food sources, identifying food chains and protecting habitats.
A Bug's Life Time: 00:11:06 - 00:12:38 This clip is about food chains. Hopper, the chief grasshopper is explaining to the ants about the food chain that they are a part of and why they should therefore be scared of the grasshoppers. After the pupils have learnt about food chains and how to write them down, they could watch the clip and test that they have understood it by writing down the food chain correctly as Hopper says it. For example the arrows should be going in the correct order etc. Subsections: Interdependence and Adaptation |
Finding Nemo Time: 00:01:44 - 00:03:05 This is a clip of Nemo’s Mum and Dad looking at their 400 eggs. It could introduce a topic about habitats by looking at how fish reproduce and how this differs from mammals, the pupils could watch the clip and write down those differences, e.g. the eggs grow outside the body, there are 400 of them. Subsections: Interdependence and Adaptation Time: 00:19:21 - 00:20:59 This is a comical approach to a food chains topic. Marlin and Dory on their search to find Nemo, come across three sharks that don’t eat them. The sharks take them to a meeting about how they are three sharks who don’t eat fish and want to change the reputation of sharks. This clip could be involved in a food chains discussion, what does a more common food chain look like involving sharks, i.e. what do they eat and what do fish eat? What will change if sharks no longer eat fish? Subsections: Interdependence and Adaptation |
